Horstmann & Co. of Philadelphia. 1820- 1930's Major maker and supplier of military equipment.

Typical square hole at the top of an Horstmann' 2 notes police whistle,
Can be noticed when loop is taken out.

Horstmann & Sons or Horstmann Borthers or W.H. Horstmann & sons.
Was established 1820 but whistle making started much later 1893-1954 W.H. Horstmann Company. Horstmann  made  referee snail shape whistles  (Escargots ), Tubular general service whistles  (GSW's) and many other products notably Buttons and swords.

Spalding L; 92mm the stamp may appear closer to the top and reversed in some
samples. Nickel Plated Brass, the Arkay comes with gold finish .

Horstmann Escargot type whistle also made for the Spalding sports company

The Bird Logo stamp is undoubtly one of the nicest stamps to be found on American metal whistles,  the whistle may be Nickel Plated and the addition of S.D&G N.Y is of a local well known whole seller of Police & Army supplies.
I recall seeing  Arkay as a company that was  located in New York at that period and was specializing in making steel stamps .

Both types of whistles the Tubular once and the Escargots made by Horstmann have special features and construction ( Loop, Mouthpiece, toothgrip, knop, Diaphragm etc.) which are unique to this maker, as well as a unique brass metal with copper color which differs from other whistles and can be easily ditinguished.
It is my estimate that the whistles I had seen were made 1900 to late 1920's.
with the earlier ones having no plating .
It is certain that more whistles made by the company are yet to be identified as Horstmann made.
some more I will bring in the future.
